Gainesville Holocaust Memorial

In Memory Of The Six Million

I Shall Give Them In My House
And Within My Walls
A Memorial And A Name

Isaiah 56:5

(Inscription on Memorial)

The Gainesville Holocaust Memorial provides a symbolic tombstone for the 6 million Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust that occurred between 1940 and 1945.

The Jewish Star cresting the Memorial is one-third unfinished, representing the loss of one-third of world Jewry in the Holocaust.  Ralph Lowenstein of Gainesville, Florida designed the granite tombstone.

The design of the Holocaust Memorial Garden was inspired by the Leningrad Codex, the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible.  The cover of the manuscript shows a Jewish Star enclosed with Hebrew scriptures forming an octagonal interior.  JOLA designed the garden for the Memorial including the foundation, pathways, benches, planting and irrigation.

The Gainesville Holocaust Memorial is located within the B'nai Israel Cemetery at the corner of University Avenue and Williston Road.
